MAKING GREAT MUSIC FUN
Top Class soloists
Sheffield based brass band, Stannington Brass, is a Yorkshire Area First Section band conducted by Musical Director, Derek Renshaw.
In January 2018 it kicked off the contesting season in fine style with a highly commendable second place at the Butlin’s Mineworkers’ Championships, beating 21 First Section bands from all over the country. A third place out of a field of 12 bands at the Yorkshire Area contest in March strengthened their position in the First Section.
In October, there were double celebrations at the Dronfield Festival of Brass in October with a first prize winning performance. Flugel horn player, Edward Knowles also produced a stellar performance with his solo, A Little Star Went Out, by Phillip Harper. Then at Bolsover Festival of Brass, Richard Dowling, our Principal Cornet, scooped the Best Soloist award with “an outstanding display of lyricism” (according to 4barsrest) on the 'Adagio' from Rachmaninov's 'Symphony Number 2'.
The 2019 contesting season started with a 6th place at the Butlin’s contest out of 16 bands from all over the country competing in the First Section.
